4.13 Devil's Due

Rating: 3

Responding to a distress call from a research station on Ventax 2, the Enterprise discovers a planet in turmoil. The Ventaxians believe that they signed a legitimate century-old deal with the devil, where they received 1000 years of peace and prosperity in exchange for their souls. They also believe that Ardra, their version of the devil, has returned to collect her due. It’s obvious that the being known as Ardra, who seems to enjoy the game, has some powers, but Picard believes that she is nothing more than a sophisticated con artist. He challenges her claim in a court where Data has been appointed judge.

Comments

This lightweight but fun episode is played for laughs by everyone. One would not seriously care what happens to the naïve Ventaxians, nor does Picard seriously seem to be worried about the Enterprise either.

This episode feels like it comes from an earlier time in Trek’s history, so it’s no surprise to find out that the concept was originally written for the Star Trek: Phase 2 show many years earlier.

The caked-on 1970s makeup worn by the devil reminded me very much of the charged-up ‘Zoul’ played by Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters.
