2.03 Elementary, Dear Data

Rating: 3

Dr Watson’s (Geordi’s) attempt to create a holographic opponent capable of defeating Data / Sherlock Holmes manufactures Dr Moriarty, a dangerous hologram who is self-aware.

Comments

Pulaski tells Data that he is just a computer and cannot begin to use creativity to deduce a mystery as Sherlock Holmes had done – she will continue her insulting tone to Data throughout her stay on the show, which will antagonize many fans.

Almost the entire episode takes place on the holodeck, except for short segments at the beginning and the end, and one meeting in the middle.

This marks the first of many occasions where the holodeck itself endangers the ship (although some would argue that the Binars use of the holodeck in 11001001 also endangers the ship).

Nits

Moriarty addresses the computer as ‘Mr. Computer’, even though the computer speaks to him in a high-pitched, obviously feminine voice.

Memorable Moments

•    Worf and Data’s startled reaction when Picard ‘pops’ his top hat.

Quotable Quotes

"Merde"
– Picard’s one-word reaction when he finds out that Geordi asked the computer to create an opponent capable of defeating Data, not Holmes.

Picard: Are you all right?
Pulaski: Yes, except for being crammed full of crumpets.
