2.06 The Schizoid Man

Rating: 2.5

Rushing to provide medical aid to the terminally ill Dr Ira Graves, Data and the Enterprise arrive just in time to witness his death, but as they leave Graves’ home planet, Data carries a secret.

Comments

It’s great to see Data acting out of character here: expressing emotion, sarcasm, and flirtatiousness.

Actor W. Morgan Sheppard appeared in the VOY episode bliss.

Nits

Troi drops her counseling skills to giggle about Data’s beard (which really isn’t funny). Does she feel that because Data is an android, she doesn’t have to be sensitive to his feelings?

The entire concept of the ‘near-warp’ transport makes no sense. Why endanger the lives of the away team by transporting while going to warp? How much time could this possibly save? Wouldn’t it be safer to wait the extra 10 seconds to do a normal transport, and then go to warp?

Although there is no cure for Damay’s disease, wouldn’t there be something that could be given to ease the pain and stop Graves from groaning theatrically every few seconds?

So how exactly did Graves transfer his consciousness into Data, and then into the Enterprise computer? Apparently, he can just ‘do it’; he doesn’t need any devices or hardware because he does it on board the Enterprise. I’m impressed.

Memorable Moments

•    Aboard Enterprise, Corinne watches the ship go to warp (and the stars blur) through the windows of an observation lounge.

Quotable Quotes

Corinne: Excuse me, sir, are you a Romulan?
Worf: Hardly.

Picard: I would accompany you to sick bay, but I don’t think it would do any good.
Data: Are you sick, Captain?
Picard: I’m getting there.

"No being is so important that he can usurp the rights of another."
– Picard to Graves/Data

Data: I trust I did nothing unbecoming to a Starfleet officer.
Riker: Does wrestling with a Klingon Targ ring a bell?
Data: Did I win?
