The debris is all that remains from a terrible war near Orleus 9; that, and a 1000 year old distress signal still being sent by an ancient Promellian ship, a museum artifact, a ‘ship in a bottle’, according to Picard. His investigation reveals that the ship was caught in a trap from which it could not escape; soon the Enterprise finds itself in the same predicament. Geordi has to put aside his dating problems to find a solution. He calls on a holographic representation of Leah Brahms, one of the original designers of the Enterprise, and finds he is very attracted to her.
Comments
The basic concept that is used to rescue the Enterprise (i.e., that instead of fighting against a force, that the opposite effect should be applied) has been used successfully in a number of other episodes and series.
Nits
I didn’t really follow why Geordi’s idea was so much better than the computer’s idea, but this was still at a time when computers were regarded with a higher degree of suspicion and mistrust.
Memorable Moments
• The moment when Leah Brahms is given a personality.
• Picard taking the helm, then using the asteroid’s gravity to slingshot around it.
Quotable Quotes
Picard: It is exactly as they left it, Number One – in the bottle. (looks around) Ship in the bot- oh, good lord, didn’t anybody here build ships in bottles when they were boys?
Worf: I did not play with toys.
Data: I was never a boy.
Guinan: I’m attracted to bald men.
Geordi: Seriously?
Guinan: Seriously.
Geordi: Why?
Guinan: Maybe because a bald man was kind to me once when I was hurting. Took care of me.
"I’m with you every day, Geordi. Every time you look at this engine, you’re looking at me. Every time you touch it, it’s me."
