A time rift hurls the Enterprise-C 22 years forward into the present, changing the time line. There, it meets the Enterprise-D, which has no Lt Worf, a still-living Tasha Yar. The Enterprise-D’s Federation is also in the middle of a war with the Klingons, which it is losing. Only Guinan knows that something is not right.
Comments
This is an exciting episode, with a clever plot featuring the possible destruction of the Enterprise.
Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) is a very popular Trek character. You can see why here; she is excellent in this episode, much better (and her character is much better written) than she was in her first stint on the show.
Nits
Yar kisses Callisto right in front of a transporter worker while on duty. I know these were very special and dramatic times, but does this seem like the type of behavior that would be tolerated in Star Fleet while on duty, and during war time?
At the very end of the episode, when Geordi is speaking to Guinan in Ten-Forward, he is still wearing the uniform from the alternate timeline.
Memorable Moments
• The final battle is excellent, the scenes with Guinan and Picard, and with Guinan and Yar, are excellent – in fact, the entire episode is excellent and well-paced.
Quotable Quotes
Guinan: Here, try this.
Worf: What is it?
Guinan: Just try it…you see? It’s an earth drink…prune juice.
Worf: (obviously impressed) A warrior’s drink!
"I would require a Klingon woman for companionship. Earth women are too fragile."
- Worf
"This is Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the starship - of a Federation starship."
- Picard not wishing to let the Enterprise-C know they are time-traveling
Picard: Who is to say that this history is any less proper than the other?
Guinan: I suppose I am.
Picard: Not good enough, damn it, not good enough!
Geordi: But how could Guinan know that history has not been altered if she has been altered along with the rest of us?
Data: Perhaps her species has a perception that goes beyond linear time.
Picard: One more ship will make no difference in the here and now, but 22 years ago, one ship could have stopped this war before it started.
Captain Garrett: Mr. Castillo, inform the crew we’re going back.
Guinan: Tasha, you’re not supposed to be here.
Tasha: Do you know where I’m supposed to be?
Guinan: Dead.
"Let’s make sure history never forgets…the name…Enterprise!"
- Picard (If that line doesn’t make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, you’re obviously not a Trekker J)
