3.22 The Most Toys

Rating: 3.5

To fix an environmental disaster on Beta Agne 2, the Enterprise requires a large quantity of the element hytritium. Fortunately, a trader named Fajo has just enough of the rare element. But while transporting the hytritium, Data dies in a shuttle explosion - at least, it seems so to the Enterprise crew. In reality, he has been kidnapped by Fajo and added to his collection of one-of-a-kind treasures.

Comments

This episode explores Data’s ability to feel emotion. Although he never admits to being able to feel, his actions and subtle sarcasm say otherwise.

There’s a strong feeling in this episode that Data was attracted to and perhaps even loved Varia – he is very affected when Fajo kills her. He even has to lie to Riker about attempting to fire the weapon at Fajo.

Interestingly, it is Worf who quietly and emotionally whispers, "Data" when the shuttlecraft explodes.

Saul Rubinek makes a ‘special guest appearance’ as Fajo. He has appeared in many other TV show and movies, includingBonfire of the Vanities and Unforgiven.

Nits

At the beginning of the episode, Data is leaving on his third shuttle trip and says, "Level 1 precautions for incoming material remain in effect." Yet when Geordi is reviewing the logs from shuttle trip 3, Data says, "Level 1 precautions remain in effect."

Memorable Moments

•    When Fajo is attempting to show off the mute Data, the tri-nostriled Palof Toph is busy picking his middle nostril in the background.

•    I liked Data mimicking the Mona Lisa.

Quotable Quotes

Fajo: Data, you will be catered to, fawned over, cared for as you never have been before. Your every wish will be fulfilled.
Data: I wish to leave.
Fajo: Almost every wish.

"His rewards for loyalty are lavish. His punishments for disloyalty are equally as…lavish."
- Varia on Fajo

"For an android with no feelings, he sure managed to evoke them in others."
- Riker on Data

"He was a man. Take him for all in all. I shall not look upon his like again."
- Picard, reading from the book he gave Data

Data: You collection has been confiscated. All of your stolen possessions are being returned to their rightful owners. You have lost everything you value.
Fajo: It must give you great pleasure.
Data: No, sir. It does not. I do not feel pleasure. I am only an android.
(Data’s wonderfully subtle sarcasm)
