3.08 The Price

Rating: 2.5

The Federation enters a bidding war with a number of other species, all interested in acquiring the rights to the Bazan’s first stable wormhole, but complications ensue when the Ferengi join the negotiations, and when wormhole investigations reveal it is not exactly as advertised.

Comments

This episode has many elements that make it interesting, even though it is flawed.

Nits

The computer states that chocolate has no nutritional value, yet some scientists are saying now (in 2001) that chocolate actually has a number of health benefits.

When Goss is trying to fire at the wormhole, he says, "Casualties of war, Captain", but his lips appear to be saying ‘Picard’.

Memorable Moments

•    When Troi is reviewing Rahl’s personnel file, the computer states: "Born – Brussels, European Alliance." Now that’s prophetic – since the European ‘Alliance’ (Union?) didn’t occur until the mid to late 1990s!

•    The scenes with Troi and Rahl would have been very memorable had they not been almost ruined by the horrible sappy background music that the creators seem to feel was necessary.

•    The aerobics scene with Troi and Dr Crusher is quite sensual.

Quotable Quotes

"Just tell me there’s some chocolate here."
- Troi

"Who needs rational when your toes curl up?"
- Dr Crusher

Geordi: You know, if this doesn’t work, the thought of spending the rest of my life in here is none too appealing.
Data: There is a bright side, Geordi: you would have me to talk to.
(Data and Geordi, about to enter the wormhole)

"Who counsels the counselor?"
- Rahl (and, while you’re asking, who watches the watchers? J)

Rahl: You know, you’re good, you’re very good at this; better than you realize.
Riker: I hope I’m better than you realize.
